Macbeth is a story of power, ambition and ultimately loss. Macbeth and Banquo, both generals in Duncan’s army, encounter three witches ‘so wither’d and wild in their attire’. They foretell the fates of both men and then vanish. Macbeth will be ‘king hereafter’ and Banquo’s sons will be kings. When Lady Macbeth hears of the prophesies she sees the opportunity to bring them about as Duncan prepares to spend the night at the Macbeth’s castle. Eventually Macbeth agrees to her plan and she drugs the servants who guard Duncan.

The next morning Macbeth feigns rage on finding the king dead. Macbeth kills the servants who he claims assassinated the old king on the order of his sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, who flee fearing for their lives. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have achieved their ambition. However, Macbeth fears the witches prophesy that Banquo’s sons will be king and sends assassins to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. After that, everything begins to fall apart as Macbeth’s rule descends into chaos and terror and Lady Macbeth unravels and then takes her own life. Finally, Macbeth realises the hollowness of the witches prophesies as he prepares to meet Macduff in battle.

‘Blood will have blood.’

We look forward to seeing you in September!
