Sextet is a comedy written in the 1970s by Michael Pertwee who is the brother of Jon Pertwee (of “Dr Who?”), cousin of Bill Pertwee (of “Dad’s Army”) and uncle of Sean Pertwee (of many film and TV appearances including “Waking the Dead”). Michael is the author of many films and plays of which “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is perhaps the best known although he also wrote a number of the Brian Rix farces of which many people are so fond. Set in 1980, it is about six people (hence the title) who plan a pleasant summer’s cruise on Roger’s luxury motor yacht in the Mediterranean. Roger has invited his old friend Philip with his wife “Old Mo” to join him as usual. Denys and his wife Valerie have also been invited because Roger wants to see if his employee, Denys, is suitable for a prestigious job in South Africa. All seems set for a restful break for them all. Then the complications start , the first in the shape of Lisa – Roger’s estranged wife – who arrives unexpectedly. Then the philandering Philip arrives with his latest acquisition, Mercy, instead of his wife. Soon every conceivable combination and permutation of twice three has been achieved with the clumsy Denys losing his contact lenses and stumbling around doing damage everywhere. Even Roger’s unseen secretary Betty Samuelson is drawn into the plot before the final hilarious and unexpected conclusion. The show is directed by Andy Taylor, has a very strong cast and will be performed for eight nights from Friday 3rd September through to Saturday 11th excluding Sunday 5th September. Doors open at 7.15pm and the curtain will rise at 7.45pm each evening. |
