The Swan’s Autumn Theatre Trip

We have decided to go for something a little different this time in the hope of appealing to a slightly wider audience!  We have booked tickets for The Doubtful Guest at the Nuffield Theatre Southampton on Saturday 11th October at 3.00 pm.

What you’ll love…Perfect comedy timing, delightful Victorian-Gothic absurdity - a joy from start to finish!

When they answered the bell on that wild winter night,
There was no one expected – and no one in sight
Then they saw something standing on top of an urn,
Whose peculiar appearance gave them quite a turn.

When an uninvited and strangely fantastical creature scuttles into the Bishop Family’s house, its very existence wreaks havoc. It challenges their strict routines and descends the family into chaos; eating plates, trapping them in their drawing room for weeks on end, and protecting their favourite possessions by dropping them into the pond. Based on the 14 rhyming couplets of one of Edward Gorey’s best-known stories, THE DOUBTFUL GUEST follows the Bishop’s desperate search for ways to deal with the oddball and ill-mannered habits of their doubtful guest.

Beautifully comic, delightfully dark and full of theatrical invention, this enchanting production by award-winning theatre company Hoipolloi captures all the Victorian pastiche, fantastical imagination and ominous air of Gorey’s original. This show will appeal to adults, children and mischievous misfits of all ages!

The price for a top ticket and the return coach journey is £25 per person.  We have arranged for the coach to leave Yeovil (Huish car park) at 9.00 am and then pick up at Sherborne (Culverhays coach park) at 9.15 to arrive in Southampton close to the shopping centre by about 11.15.  This will give you a few hours to do some early Christmas shopping in the big West Quay Mall or time just to have a nice relaxing meal in one of the many restaurants in the city centre.

We will then be collected at 2.15 pm to be taken up to the Nuffield Theatre (which is on the University campus) for the show’s start at 3.00 pm.  We will leave straight after the show and be back in Sherborne by about 7.00 pm and Yeovil a little later. We think this will suit all ages and so bring your children or grandchildren, although since these theatre tickets are at a significantly discounted price and hence they are much cheaper than the concessionary prices, it is therefore one price (£25) for all tickets.

DO NOT DELAY – BOOK TODAY  by sending a cheque payable to the Swan Theatre Company to Andy Taylor, Cornerstone, Gifle View, Thornford, Sherborne, DT9 6SS.  We have to pay for the tickets by the 23rd September so orders after that will have to be rejected.  Any other information available from Andy and Elaine on 01935 873102
